Privacy Policy
This page explains what personal data bw plug collects, why, and what rights you have over it. We have tried to write it in plain language rather than dense legal text.

1. Who we are
bw plug is the service you are using now, at bwplug.me. For the personal data described in this policy, bw plug is the "data controller": the party that decides why and how your data is used.
If you have any question about your data or this policy, contact us at [email protected].
2. What we collect
What we collect depends on how you use bw plug.
If you have a bw plug account: your name, email address and a password (we store this as a secure hash, never in plain text), plus whatever you choose to put on your page: your bio, photo, links, socials, and any product or service listings you add.
If you book someone through their bw plug page: your name and phone number. Your details go to the person you are booking with, so they can manage your booking. We are not part of that appointment; the person you booked is responsible for it.
If you just visit a bw plug page: we only count page views in aggregate. We do not use third-party trackers or advertising cookies. That is true, and it is one of the ways we are different from most other websites.
If you turn on push notifications: we store a subscription token for your device, so we know where to send them.
3. Why we use it
For each purpose below, the law requires us to have a "legal basis": a valid reason we are allowed to use your data.
| Purpose | What we use | Our legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Running your account, page, bookings and shop | Account, profile and booking data | Necessary to provide the service you asked for (a contract with you) |
| Showing you how your page is doing | Aggregate page view counts | Our legitimate interest in helping you understand and grow your page, without identifying individual visitors |
| Sending you push notifications | Your subscription token | Your consent, given when you turn notifications on |
5. Where it goes
Running bw plug may mean your data is processed on servers outside Botswana. Botswana's Transfer of Personal Data Order 2022 treats a set of countries, including South Africa, Kenya, the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, as offering adequate protection for your data. The United States is not on that list. Where we use a provider outside that list, we put safeguards in place to protect your data to the same standard.
6. How long we keep it
| Data | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Account and profile data | For as long as your account is active, plus 30 days after you delete it |
| Booking records | Until the booking is completed, plus 12 months |
| Financial and tax records | 7 years, as required by tax law |
| Aggregate statistics (e.g. view counts) | Indefinitely, once they no longer identify anyone |
| Push notification subscription tokens | Until you unsubscribe |
7. Your rights
Under the Data Protection Act, you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- correct it, if it is wrong or out of date;
- delete it (see your account settings for self-service deletion);
- restrict how we use it in certain circumstances;
- receive a copy of it in a portable format (see the data export option in your settings);
- object to how we use it, including the aggregate stats we mentioned above; and
- withdraw consent at any time, for anything we rely on your consent for, such as push notifications.
To exercise any of these rights, use the relevant option in your account settings, or email [email protected]. This is always free. We will respond within one month.
8. Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please tell us first at [email protected], so we can try to put it right.
You also have the right to complain to Botswana's Information and Data Protection Commission, or to seek a remedy through the courts.
9. Children
bw plug is only for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we will close the account and delete their data.
10. Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational steps to protect your data: passwords are stored as secure hashes, not plain text; connections to bw plug are encrypted; and access to personal data is limited to what is needed to run the service.
11. Automated decisions
We do not make automated decisions that produce legal effects about you.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make a significant change, we will let you know, for example by email or a notice in your dashboard. The "last updated" date at the top of this page always shows the current version.
13. Contact us
For anything to do with your privacy, email [email protected].
This policy works alongside our Terms of Use. Reading both gives you the full picture of how bw plug works.
